2011 was a successful year for the Wellow & Plaitford U11s, not so much from the results on the pitch (see below), but more because of the increase in the number of boys playing and enjoying their cricket, quite a few of whom were new to the game this year. We ended the season with over 20 boys regularly attending the training sessions on Wednesday evenings, and huge thanks are due to Martin Ball who, along with Charlie King and Steve Warner, made these sessions great fun for everyone.
Our very first Wellow and Plaitford Under 9 Competition was played on Aug 21st. Based on the popular format used at the Rosebowl, 4 teams from Michelmersh & Timsbury, OT & Romsey, Langley Manor and Wellow and Plaitford enjoyed an afternoon of short 8 over games.
Wellow and Plaitford beat Michelmersh and Timsbury in the final, but the fact that players were shared between all teams on the day highlights the good natured spirit that all teams brought to the afternoon. The photo (right) shows the M&T and Wellow teams.
Thanks to Scott Ryan (pictured far right) for managing the team on the day, Lee Palmer for running the competition and all the people who helped out at the club.

Wellow and Plaitford Colts Teams make Impressive Start to 2011
Wellow U9 (pairs cricket)
The U9s got their season off to a flying start on Friday with a victory against an extremely tough side in the shape of OTs & Romsey. Wellow started the batting with the excellent
opening pair of Digger Sweeny and James Cooper. William Bethel was top scorer with 13 as he and Ollie Dovey followed on with a good partnership of 17. Fours from both Jamie Ball
and James Dance and quick running between the wickets especially by Michael Parsons saw Wellow’s total go to 248 for 3 wickets.
Sonny Ryan opened the bowling with a brilliant ‘caught and bowled’ in the first over and was later to have a great session in the field. Three wickets fell to William Bethel in a very good
two-over spell. First class bowling from Jamie Ball led to two very economical overs. Further solid bowling from both Ollie Dovey and James Dance kept the runs to a minimum.
In the field there were outstanding performances, Michael Parson’s brilliant throw from deep point was right on target for a superb run out, James Cooper and Digger Sweeny saved
at least 6 boundaries fielding in mid-wicket and deep square leg respectively and Jamie Ball’s brilliant catch in the penultimate over topped off a great evening of cricket. Special
thanks must go to Emily Ball for scoring so well during the evening and to OTs & Romsey, who made us so welcome.
Wellow U11
For the second weekend running W&PCC U11s suffered a last-over NFJCA league defeat, in another thrilling game. Following last week’s defeat off the last ball of the innings against
OTs & Romsey, this week they suffered a similar fate, as Winterslow made the winning run in the last over. Thanks are due to the efforts of Winterslow for getting the game played,
given the heavy overnight rain, but the slow pitch and damp outfield made scoring difficult for both sides.
Wellow lost the toss and Winterslow elected to field. The Wellow top order scored steadily with solid contributions from Ben Jenden (4), Jonty Crossland (5) and Haydn Barnes (6), but
found difficulties in getting the ball anywhere near the boundary. The batting of Callum Grundy (20) gave the innings much needed impetus and some strong hitting from Jamie
Marshall (12) and good running between the wickets from the later batsmen, allowed Wellow to reach 68 for 9 at the end of their allotted 18 overs.
Winterslow made a solid start to their reply, and good batting from their openers put on 35 before the first wicket fell in the 10th over. Accurate bowling from Wellow always kept
the score in check, notably from James Cater, Ben Fisher, Eason Ryan, Jamie Marshall and Luke Taylor-Blake. Special mention must be made of the bowling of Jamie Ball, (filling in
as a late substitute from the U9s) and his accurate bowling (1 wicket for 3 runs off 2 overs) was the highlight of the Wellow team performance in the field. However, Winterslow kept
scoring runs when they needed to and, despite some great fielding from Wellow, including a run-out from Ben Jenden, Winterslow reached the last over needing just one run to win. A
scrambled leg-bye off the 3rd ball got them to the target.
Another exciting game of cricket, played in great spirit by both sides, but unfortunately another close defeat for Wellow. The good news is that Wellow have an early chance of
revenge against Winterslow when the teams meet in 2 weeks time in the first round of the NFJCA Cup.
Wellow U13
The U13s had a comfortable win over Hyde, featuring a star performance from spin bowler Ollie White in a strong team display. Wellow put Hyde in but were up against it early on as
the openers rattled up 58 by the 11th over. The stand was broken by Ollie Lambert’s great throw from fine leg which ran out opener Cakebread. Rowley retired on 33 before Ed Barnes
bowled Holmes to make it 60/2. After that, Hyde were in difficulties - an appeal for a run out after Will Miles’ direct hit from third man was turned down, but spinner Ollie White’s
introduction caused chaos in the middle order: Adam Cater grabbed a stumping in White’s first over, his second was a triple wicket maiden (all bowled with clever flight) and the hat-
trick ball at the start of his third over tempted Goodwin out of his crease and Cater whipped off the bales. Hyde finished on 91/7 from their 18 overs.
Wellow were in trouble at first as their opener was bowled by Rowley in the first over before Ollie Lambert and Harry Field settled in against some hostile bowling and put on 56 before
Lambert (17) was bowled in the ninth over. Max Beaver replaced Lambert and Field retired on 32 with six fierce boundaries, Beaver was then bowled with 23 needed from five overs,
but Owen Light (8no) and Adam Hudson (10no) comfortably wrapped it up with more than over to spare. Ollie White was presented with the match ball at the end of the game for his
stunning performance of 3-1-6-5.
Wellow U15 (North League)
Both Wellow and their opposition’s teams had only recently been put together, but they served up a thrilling game on Sunday morning with Wellow running out close winners.
Wellow were put into bat, starting slowly but gradually increasing their run rate with the middle order partnership of brothers Hashim and Talal Amjad top scoring with 16 and
17 respectively, Talal hitting a six in the process. James Kendle caught the eye for M&T with figures of 5 wickets for 4 runs off 4 overs. In the final over, tail ender Will Hill and the
unbeaten Hashim Amjad managed to put on another 11 runs to take Wellow’s total to a respectable 77 for 8.
In reply, M&T began knocking up the runs at a quicker rate, recovering from losing a wicket on the first ball to Hashim. Jacob Grimes top scored for M&T with 30 and it was his wicket
that proved pivotal (superbly caught and bowled by Hashim). Talal Amjad (2 for 12 from 4) and Luke McCarthy (1 for 10 from 4) began to slow M&T's progress and with scoreboard
pressure mounting, M&T needed 7 from the final over. Wellow new player Henry Lovell, (who took a wicket in his first over), bowled a steady final over to see Wellow win, with M&T
falling just 3 runs short for the loss of 7 wickets.
Wellow U15 (South League)
Wellow got their South Division season off to a winning start beating Mudeford by 44 runs. After losing the toss, Wellow were put in to bat with opening pair James Sampson and
Charlie Field making their intentions clear with Sampson hitting two boundaries before edging one and being caught behind. Josh Kennedy was next to the crease and hit a majestic
40 runs to retire. Charlie Field was unlucky to be run out for 19 runs after beginning to find the boundary. Wellow then lost two cheap wickets, Lewis Oliver (4) and Ollie Lerway (3)
before Kieran Hancock resurrected the scoring hitting 33 not out off of 21 balls. Wellow lost a further two wickets, Angus Marshall (1) and Cam Sahota (1) with Barney Orr finishing six
not out.
Having set Mudeford a target of 125 to win, Wellow got an early breakthrough with Angus Marshall taking a superb catch off the bowling of Lewis Oliver 2-0-19-1. In the slips, Liam
Dance followed with another great catch off of James Sampson 3-0-14-1. Mudeford were making a good game of it and were only just off the pace after nine overs. Barney Orr 4-
0-10-0 bowled well and kept the scoring down. Pick of the bowlers, Dom Collicott 3-0-8-2 and Liam Dance 2-1-1-2 whose efforts included a wicket maiden, took two wickets a piece.
Mudeford were then unable to trouble the target and finished on 80 runs.
Wellow U17
Wellow’s U17 league winners (’08 and ’09) began their new season with a characteristically strong and entertaining win over Damerham CC, by 39 runs. After winning the toss Charlie
King, elected to bat on a sunny spring evening. Despite the loss of a wicket in the second over with the score on 9, Charlie Field (1) steadied the innings and displayed some exquisite
strokes before being caught and bowled on 41, giving Wellow an excellent base. Charlie King (3) kept up the momentum with a very polished 53 (retired) and James Sampson (4)
produced an entertaining and explosive 53 (retired). A strong finishing couple of overs from Josh Kennedy 12 (n/o) and Lewis Oliver 10 (n/o) ended the Wellow innings in style on 175
for 2 from 18 overs, an impressive 9.7 runs per over.
Damerham CC in reply made a quick start and played their part in this very entertaining and high scoring fixture. Excellent bowling performances by Scott Higgins, 4 overs 16 for 1
creating the initial scoreboard pressure, Josh Kennedy 3 overs 23 for 1 and Abraham Bass 3 overs 29 for 1 continued to challenge. Eventually, falling behind the run rate, Damerham had
no answer to Charlie Kings off spin as he finished with figures of 4 overs 27 for 6 to seal this impressive win.
